3 Young Adults Share How They Learned to Thrive With Cardiovascular Disease

**Heart Health for Younger Adults**

Did you know that cardiovascular disease can affect individuals of all ages, including younger adults? According to the American Heart Association (AHA), over 28 million adults in the United States live with cardiovascular disease.

While older adults are often associated with heart health issues, a recent study by Northwestern University found that 1 in 7 adults aged 30-59 has a high 30-year risk for cardiovascular disease. So, what's driving these early onset cases?

Experts explain that younger adults may face higher risks of cardiovascular disease due to factors like obesity, smoking, or uncontrolled medical problems such as diabetes, obesity, and hypertension.

**Maintaining Heart Health**

To reduce the risk of heart disease, experts recommend following the AHA's Life's Essential 8:

  • Managing high blood pressure
  • Managing diabetes
  • Maintaining healthy cholesterol levels
  • Smoking cessation
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Getting proper sleep
  • Exercising regularly (including both cardio and resistance training)
  • Eating a healthy, balanced diet emphasizing whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins

"One of the most important things I've learned is that it's not about making drastic changes, but about finding ways to incorporate healthy habits into your daily life," says Blair Suter, MD, a cardiologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

**Real-Life Stories**

We spoke with three individuals who have been affected by cardiovascular disease and are now taking steps to maintain their heart health. Their stories serve as a reminder of the importance of paying attention to your heart health, no matter your age.

Each of these individuals has experienced the traditional risk factor of elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels and is now working to maintain their cholesterol levels through medication and healthy lifestyle habits.

Crystal Davis, 52

Davis was diagnosed with cardiovascular disease at age 48 due to high blood pressure and a small blockage in her carotid artery. She has since made significant changes to her diet and exercise routine and is now working to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
