A recent study published in Nature Medicine suggests that a fasting-mimicking diet may be beneficial for individuals with mild to moderate Crohn's disease. The research, conducted by Stanford University, found that a short-term calorie-restricted diet improved physical symptoms and biological indicators of the disease.

Benefits of Calorie Deficit for Crohn's Patients

The study involved 97 participants with Crohn's disease from across the United States. Those in the fasting-mimicking group consumed between 700 and 1,100 calories per day for five consecutive days out of every month for three consecutive months. This approach resulted in significant improvements in symptoms for two-thirds of the participants.

Reduced Gut Inflammation with Fasting-Mimicking Diet

The researchers also found that those who followed the fasting-mimicking diet had reduced levels of calprotectin protein in their stool, indicating less gut inflammation. Additionally, immune cells produced fewer inflammatory molecules in this group.

Expert Insights

"We were very pleasantly surprised that the majority of patients seemed to benefit from this diet," said Sidhartha R. Sinha, MD, an assistant professor of gastroenterology and hepatology at Stanford. "This study will give physicians evidence to support recommendations in an area that patients are very curious about."

While the results are promising, experts caution that a fasting-mimicking diet may not be suitable for everyone with Crohn's disease due to potential risks such as malnutrition, weight loss, and dehydration. As with any dietary change, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional before making significant adjustments to your eating habits.
