**Understanding the Connection Between Perimenopause and Cardiovascular Health**

Research suggests that perimenopause may be an ideal time for women to adopt lifestyle changes that can help lower their risk of cardiovascular disease. A recent study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that perimenopausal women are more likely to have lower cardiovascular health scores, which can increase their risk of heart disease.

Perimenopause is a transitional period leading up to menopause during which hormone levels, particularly estrogen, begin to decline. A nationwide analysis showed that U.S. females experiencing perimenopause are twice as likely to have a low cardiovascular health score compared to those who are still regularly menstruating.

**The Importance of Perimenopause in Cardiovascular Health**

According to Dr. Jossef Amirian, a board-certified cardiologist, "From a cardiovascular standpoint, perimenopause is a very important time in which there are changing hormone levels that can impact how one's cardiovascular system responds." He notes that these changes can lead to potential increases in blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels, body fat distribution, and blood flow and circulation.

How Perimenopause Impacts Cardiovascular Health

A study using data from 9,248 females aged 18-80 found that perimenopausal women were more likely to have lower cardiovascular health scores. The researchers used the American Heart Association's (AHA) Life's Essential 8 (LE8) metrics to measure participants' cardiovascular health scores.

The LE8 scores are scientifically-based measures of cardiovascular health, including:

  • Diet
  • Physical activity
  • Tobacco use
  • Sleep
  • Blood pressure
  • Blood sugar levels
  • Cholesterol levels
  • Body weight

The study found that perimenopausal women had lower average LE8 scores compared to premenopausal and postmenopausal women:

  • Premenopausal females (average age of 34): average score of 73.3
  • Perimenopausal females (average age of 50.5): average score of 69.1
  • Postmenopausal females (average age of 60): average score of 63.9

The study also found that perimenopausal women were more likely to have higher cholesterol and blood glucose levels compared to premenopausal women.
