**New Research Eases Fears About Menopause Hormone Therapy and Dementia Risk**

According to a recent review of over 1 million women's health data, menopause hormone therapy (MHT) is not associated with an increased risk of dementia.

Menopause hormone therapy, previously known as hormone replacement therapy (HRT), is used to alleviate common symptoms of menopause. For decades, women have been cautioned about potential risks, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and dementia.

However, new evidence suggests that some of these concerns may have been overstated. In a significant shift, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) removed its black box warning labels on MHT products in November 2022.

A major meta-analysis commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO) found no link between MHT and dementia risk. The study, published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity, provides valuable insights for clinicians and patients alike.

“Our research aims to inform upcoming WHO guidelines on reducing the risk of cognitive decline and dementia,” says Melissa Melville, a PhD Candidate and Ageing Researcher at University College London. “We hope that our findings will help guide decisions about MHT and prioritize symptom relief and quality of life.”

**A Brief History of Menopause Hormone Therapy**

Menopause hormone therapy has been used to manage menopausal symptoms since the 1960s. However, its history is complex and contentious.

In 2002, results from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study suggested that MHT risks outweighed benefits. This led to a significant decline in MHT use and sparked ongoing controversy.

Subsequent research has sought to clarify the relationship between MHT and dementia risk. Our latest findings provide reassurance for women considering hormone therapy, emphasizing the importance of symptom relief and quality of life in treatment decisions.
