So far, 18 American passengers have been repatriated to the United States, with two being treated in biocontainment units for mild symptoms and one testing positive for hantavirus.

The outbreak occurred on the Dutch-flagged MV Hondius, which departed from southern Argentina on April 1 with approximately 150 passengers and crew aboard. Just 11 days into the voyage, a 70-year-old man died after developing fever, headaches, and abdominal pain. Additional passengers soon became ill, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to identify the ship as the site of a hantavirus outbreak.

As of May 12, there were 11 confirmed cases of hantavirus linked to the ship, with three deaths reported. The WHO has stated that while more cases are expected due to the dynamics of spread on a ship and the virus' incubation period, the broader public risk remains low.

"I think we're actually in very good shape," said Lina Moses, PhD, an epidemiologist and disease ecologist at Tulane University's Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine. "It's not surprising we're starting to see more suspected cases. That means that the process is working right."

While repatriation efforts have fueled fears of another pandemic, experts say these concerns are overstated. The risk of a COVID-like pandemic remains low, and health officials are working to contain the spread of hantavirus.
